A Knitting Shop To Remember

I cannot tell you what a dream it is to spend time in Michele Cahill’s Madison Wool Shop in Madison, Connecticut. I’m a knitting nut of course, but there’s just something about this place, the color of the walls, the vintage music playing in the background, not to mention the warmth emitted from Michele. She’s a heck of a knitter herself, so if there are questions she’s at the ready.

So glad knitting has made a comeback. I have been knitting for years and have every item I have ever knit for my baby, who is now 19. I just wish we had a needlework (cross stitch) shop on the shore, miss the one in Branford that has closed. The needle arts are a treasure, and so soothing in such tough times.

So Valerie, bring your 19 year old down to Madison and teach her to knit. It’s not your Mother’s knitting these days you know :)

  • Valerie Morrell says:

She’s a he, but I am teaching a friend of mine the basics right now. She lives in Madison so I will bring her there. I want her to knit a pretty scarf with a funky fabric, you know, to get that first sense of accomplishment. From there I did suggest some classes, they are the best way to get into the friendships through the handcraft arts as well!

PS-And thank you for suggesting all of these wonderful small places in general. So many good people to support in Connecticut!

Ann, you hit the nail on the head with your description of Madison wool. I consider the day I walked into that magical shop my lucky day. Not only did I discover a new interest but I have also gained a circle of friends that is as tightly knitted as any of the fine items I aspire to create. Michele helpfully guides you through projects and celebrates with you when you wear it with pride into her shop (no matter how long it took to complete!). This place is truly a treasure on the shoreline.

Ann, I am not as fortunate to live on the shoreline, but I am fortunate to
be able to truck myself several times a week to that gem of a store, Madison Wool. As you say, the color
scheme, the yarn, the fireplace and the owner’s friendliness are just the
beginning. Sometimes, I even show up without my knitting, just to help solve the problems of the world! Love your blog.

  • Annie Mame says:

Claire, the world is a better place when you’re in there helping, thanks for your random acts of kindness.

  • Becca says:

I adore Madison Wool (and Michele) – one of the coziest stores and nicest shopkeepers around.

  • Chris says:

The shop looks wonderful. I am stuck in gloomy essex with a limited number of wool shops so am very jealous.

Fortunately my wife owns one, Bodkins. Hwoever, she would die for the Madison wool shop.
