Let me begin with a scream (okay I muffled it) but that’s what I did when I saw the designs of Kim Hicks. Kim, originally from Michigan, is a couture and ready-to-wear designer in New York City who lives and works in her loft in TriBeCa.
Kim has bolts of incredible fabrics and her trusty sewing machine right in her design space. While some fashion designers work out their creations with flat patterns, Kim, a Parson’s School of Design grad ,works on a dressmaker’s mannequin and drapes with muslin first. You wouldn’t believe what she was working on when I was there, it’s top secret, only wish I could show you.
My friend, Karen Bussen, (originally from Ohio) brought Kim’s designs to my attention in a post on her Facebook page, the other day and my jaw dropped. I wanted to meet this woman designing such beautiful gowns and dresses with such vintage flair. I asked Karen to introduce me ASAP and the rest is history. We all met in TriBeCa, had lunch and then fabulous desserts, the dessert portion of this story is also a post for another time.
Just so you know Karen Bussen is an events planner the likes of which, well just click on her name and you’ll see. So to be sandwiched in between these two young vibrant, talented Midwesterners who found their way to the Northeast, well it was just such a moment. By the way, rounding out the Midwestern thing, I’m originally from Indiana. So it was a trifecta in TriBeCa. Somebody grab that domain.
There is a big time motive to my madness here, being totally crazy about Connecticut (not in the Midwest) I want Kim in Connecticut designing all her wonderfulness. I told her she’s designing clothing which is right up many people’s alley. She is making women look like women, femine and beautiful. I also asked her if she could design for those of us who don’t have a couture pocketbook and also for weddings.
You know what her answer was, she thinks it could be possible. So cue a space in Connecticut, anybody know of a place?
The photographs of her gowns and cocktail dresses were taken by Kim in Paris a few weeks back, (again I muffle my scream). I have hatched my plot and have introduced Kim to another gal (in Connecticut) who could design a fab web site and marketing package and get this gal on the map.
Kim’s partner is her dog, Bailey, who is just the cutest . He greeted Karen and I at the door and was of course ready for his close up. So what do you think of my plan…get Kim and Bailey to Connecticut pretty good right? I sew and am ready to do my part.
